Write Your Novel in 6 Months and Have Fun Doing It!
[Please subscribe, share, or leave me a comment down below:) I appreciate any feedback good or bad, so don't be bashful, leave your thoughts!!Finally finishing that damn novel that's been on your mind
Still stuck on that pesky novel you started ten months ago and never wrote past a chapter. Or maybe you're staring at a blank page on your word document thinking how the hell you're going to start the first page. What would a publisher, or a general person want to read when first starting out? Well, that was me not so long ago, until I realized a few things about writing and the way our brains work that really help me get my word count up each day. These tactics are not for the faint of heart, but in my mind are the most logical ways that you can beat writers block, and finally feel like you're moving forward significantly with your novel. So here goes, enjoy!
Don't Write in Order
For me at least, whenever I would write a scene and it seemed as if it was never going to end, the fogginess and loss of creativity present in writers block was usually next to follow. My solution WRITE SOMETHING ELSE. If you're writing a scene about a vampire melting in the sun and you get bored, switch to another scene in the book where a vampire marries his son's math tutor then dies at their wedding at the beach........you get what I'm saying. Just write, write anything, something to just get words down on paper if you feel like you're on a hot streak. Don't waste your moments of creativity, write your favorite scenes first, you novel, and your publisher will thank you.Whenever I'd have that feeling in my fingers that I just wanted to write and write and write, here's what I would do to help maximize my most creative moments, and get thousands of words down on paper in just one day. So with the assumption that you're feeling extra creative one day (or you have extreme writers block) here's how you can maximize your word count for the day.
1. Clean your room- A clean work space will help you think more clearly, feel better about yourself, and will make you more optimistic.
2. Drink Green Tea- The low caffeine content will give you a slight boost without a crash later, resulting in sustained, efficient energy, and a perfect way to get the creative juices flowing.
3. Open a blank page- Some writers fear the blank page. I say, embrace it! A blank page means you'll have to write more to fill it up.
Write and Write and Write whenever you're feeling creative. Even if you feel like the writing is crap...you can surely edit it later, just get your thoughts out on paper for now.
I found (for me at least) that whenever I open a blank page, I change it to single spaced, eight font. It makes me feel like I've written less than I actually have, and
If you're having a bad day, or are just staring at the screen and thinking to yourself "why am I doing this?" Shut off your computer and do something else. Writing should fill you with a sense of almost joy and euphoria as you see your dreams, and your beautiful artwork coming to life. Plus your state of sadness will put a much darker tone on your writing style. So perk up before you try to finish 10,000 words in one day:)
Sleep Optimization
Some people are night owls and write great at 2 in the morning (yours truly), and others like to wake up at the crack of dawn and start writing at 6 in the morning. Whatever your best time for writing is, optimize and plan your sleep schedule around it, and make sure you write as much as you can during these hours.
Myself, like many people, love to write to the sound of music. When I write I blast heavy metal in each ear and go nuts on the blank page. Whatever works for you however, whether classical, instrumental, or even screamo, you can surely add music to your writing motivation formula.
Coffee and tea for writers block, and maintaining a hot streak
Next time you're not feeling one hundred percent in touch with your writing, or you're on fire with a scene but feel yourself drifting, reach for a caffeinated beverage. Caffeine energizes you, and will help your writing flow by giving you a burst of jittery, focused energy, greatly reducing your temporary "writers block."
As far as maintaing a hot streak however, I would stick with tea, as it will energize you enough to keep your streak constant, without the debilitating crash later, maximizing your writing
Don't worry about editing for now just write! Write a shitty first draft and fix it later
Write and Write and Write!! Even if it's terrible, you can fix it later, nothing is written in stone:)
Take a Break, then go back and edit it
Once you've finished your first draft print it and walk away from the computer screen for a while. For the next few weeks or so, use your pen and lazily mark some important corrections in your printed manuscript. Once you feel comfortable enough with it, begin the editing process, REWRITING the entire book. It's a lot easier once you have something to look at trust me;) Plus you'll more easily pick out what needs to be changed, and feel confident that your work is publisher worthy!
Final Thoughts:
If these don't work, see my blog homepage on sexual transmutation, meditating and nootropics. If it's still not working...you're not a writer, take up cross stitching instead:)
